Lily Sugar ’n Cream Cotton Yarn Review

Lily Sugar ’n Cream Cotton Yarn

Lily Sugar ’n Cream is one of the most popular cotton yarns among crocheters and knitters, and for good reason. This classic worsted-weight yarn has been around for decades and is loved for its durability, bright colors, and affordability.

What Makes It Special

  • 100% Cotton: It’s made from natural, soft cotton, making it perfect for projects that need to be absorbent and sturdy.
  • Huge Color Range: Available in solids, stripes, and ombrés, so it’s easy to find a shade to match your project.
  • Easy to Find: You can usually find Lily Sugar ’n Cream at big craft stores like Michaels or Walmart and even some local shops.

Best Uses

  • Because it’s 100% cotton, this yarn is especially great for:
  • Dishcloths & washcloths
  • Towels
  • Market bags
  • Pot holders & trivets
  • Home décor projects

Things to Know

  • Care: It’s machine washable and dryable, which makes it great for everyday items. However, like most cotton yarns, it doesn’t have much stretch.
  • Texture: Some crocheters find it a little stiff when working, but it softens nicely after a few washes.
  • Weight: It’s a medium (worsted/4) weight yarn, so it pairs well with a 4.5–5mm crochet hook or 4.5–5mm knitting needles.

My Thoughts

Lily Sugar ’n Cream has a special place in many yarn collections. It may not be the softest yarn on the market, but it’s practical, reliable, and colorful. If you love making quick, functional crochet projects, this yarn is definitely worth having on hand.

Lily Sugar 'n Cream Variegated

Adding Contrast with Lily Sugar ’n Cream Variegated Yarn

Some of my favorite Lily Sugar 'n Cream yarn are the variegated ones. I use them for making dishcloths, pot holders or coasters.

One of my favorite things about working with Lily Sugar ’n Cream yarn is how versatile it is, especially when it comes to the variegated shades including the self striping. The color changes built right into the yarn make even the simplest stitches look more interesting. But what I’ve found really makes a project pop is pairing a variegated or self striping yarn with a solid color.

For example, I like using the variegated or self striping yarn as the main body of a dishcloth or potholder, then finishing it off with a crisp solid-color border. The solid edging frames the piece, highlighting all the color changes and giving the project a polished look.

You can also flip the idea around—work the dishcloth in a solid color and then add a variegated border. This gives you just a touch of color play without overwhelming the project. It’s especially fun if you have leftover yarns in your stash because you can mix and match different combinations. This doesn't work as well with the self striping yarn.

Some of my favorite combos are:

  • Bright variegated or self striping yarns with a matching solid color border (makes the colors stand out).
  • Pastel variegated or self striping yarns paired with a coordinating solid (gives a soft, blended look).
  • Bold solid yarns like red, yellow or orange with a variegated border (adds a dramatic contrast).

Whether you’re making dishcloths, potholders, or even coasters, this simple mix-and-match trick is an easy way to elevate your crochet projects and give them that extra bit of personality.

Red Heart Super Saver Yarn

Red Heart Super Saver – For Every Yarn Collector

If you’ve been crocheting or knitting for any length of time, chances are you’ve come across Red Heart Super Saver. It’s one of those classic yarns that almost everyone has in their stash at some point.

Why I Like It:

  • Affordable & Accessible – You can find it in almost every craft store and even in some big-box retailers.
  • Durable – This yarn holds up well for everyday projects, especially afghans and home décor.
  • Color Variety – The color selection is huge! From solids to variegated shades, it’s easy to find the perfect match for your project.
  • No-Dye-Lot Colors – Many shades are no-dye-lot, which means you can buy more later without worrying about exact color matching.

What I Use It For:

  • Cozy afghans and throw blankets
  • Simple scarves and hats
  • Crochet projects that need to last through wear and washing

Final Thoughts:
Red Heart Super Saver might not be the softest yarn out of the skein, but once washed, it softens up nicely. For its price, reliability, and availability, it’s a solid choice for yarn collectors, crocheters, and knitters alike.
